Entrepreneurship and leadership are extremely sexy right now. However, in our collective desire to urge each other on, and level-up our own skills, we have reinforced some pretty destructive lies around what it means to be a leader.
The culture that has grown out of the desire to do truly great things has some beautiful parts, and let’s be real, some damaging ones.
Truth time.
“Hustle” is 90% hype.
Hustle for the sake of hustle alone will burn you out.
If all it took to lead a killer team was hard work, more people would be successful at it.
In my 20 years of experience working with hundreds of leaders, I have taken stock of what next-level leaders do differently than those around them.
That knowledge shapes the path I walk with all those who take the leap with me in leadership without the hustle. Together, we carve out these 3 pillars that make the real difference.
They have a Solid Self-Awareness. They know how they actually show up (not just how they think or hope they do) in the areas of Strategy, Action, and Results. They know who they are on the job. They have a solid handle on their own Emotional Intelligence, Communication Transparency, Character, and Development. They also have a plan for continued growth in the areas that intention is out of alignment with impact.
They regularly inventory their teams to assure that the right people are in the right seats. They are explicitly clear about what success looks like for every position in their organization. They have written job descriptions and key performance indicators that give every employee a crystal clear understanding of what the most important parts of their job are and help them prioritize their work accordingly.
They know how and when to apply different leadership styles and tools for success. They delegate effectively and with the confidence that things won’t go completely off the rails. They coach team members to new levels of ability and run a team of rock stars they have had a hand in creating, they know how to run meetings that get stuff done, and they hire the best.
Building a killer team is a process, and that process starts with you. Stop buying into the hype. Start investing in what actually works.
